New Search Options for Controlled Wordlists

Great news!

The best wordlist builder just got better with the addition of the following 5 new types of searches:
  1. Grapheme Searches
  2. Morphology Searches
  3. Phoneme Searches
  4. Syllabication Searches
  5. “Quick” Searches

Grapheme Searches – Search for specific graphemes based on their location in the words.  There are four filters of this type:
  • First Grapheme
  • Last Grapheme
  • Any Grapheme
  • Does Not Contain Grapheme

Morphology Searches – Search for specific prefixes and suffixes in words:  There are two filters of this type:
  • Prefixes
  • Suffixes

Phoneme Searches – Identify the number of sounds that you’d like to have in each word.  This is useful because some words have more letters than sounds.  For example, the word ‘time’ has 4 letters from only 3 sounds. There is one filter of this type:
  • Number of Sounds

Syllabication Searches – Find words based on specific syllable division rules.  This search is especially powerful because finding controlled wordlists based on syllabication can be very time consuming.  There is one filter of this type:
  • Syllable Division

Quick Searches – Include or Exclude Words based on specific broad categories. For example, you can decide that a wordlist needs to include or exclude words with digraphs.  There are two filters of this type:
  • Quick Exclude
  • Quick Include

A few weeks ago a woman named Adrianne Meldrum scheduled a time to speak on Whizzimo’s scheduling page.  I assumed that she was interested in Whizzimo (she was), but during the course of her conversation I learned about The Tutor Coach, her fabulous website that helps tutors grow their business.

Over the last few weeks, Adrianne and I have had some great conversations, and I strongly believe that she’s helping tutors move further into the 21st Century, from teaching tutors how to tutor remotely to developing all of the necessary documents to run a professional tutoring business.

You can connect with Adrianne via her website or on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest.

Happy Teaching!

(By the way, Adrianne isn’t paying us to say any of this.  We just think she’s awesome!)

One thing that we’ve heard from our users over and over is that they love us because we save them time.  And since we love the love, we’ve decided to update our collection of default workbooks, the “Whizzimo Collection”, from 50 workbooks to over 300 workbooks!

These workbooks are only a few clicks away inside Whizzimo.  Simply click on “Browse Workbook Collection”, select a workbook that you’d like to add, click “Add To My Library”, and the workbook will appear in your Workbook Library.

You can view the list of workbooks in the Whizzimo Collection at www.whizzimo.com/workbooks.
If you use either the Wilson Reading System or Wilson Fundations, you can also view a list of Whizzimo workbooks that align with those programs here.

We’ve seen the same story unfold too many times…

We’ve seen the same story unfold too many times…

A child begins falling behind her peers in school.  Reading and spelling just aren’t coming naturally to her.  She may be misdiagnosed as lazy – if only she’d just “work harder”.

However, at some point the right educator intervenes, gives her the personalized instruction that she needs, and everything begins to change.  Learning becomes fun again, scores begin to improve, and household tensions start to fade.

For a struggling student, a great teacher is truly a hero.

Whizzimo & Remote Tutoring Sessions with Mark Rogers from Eulexic.com

Hi, I’m Dr. Mark Rogers.

I’m a Reading Therapist with Eulexic Reading Therapy (www.eulexic.com). Eulexic simply means “good with words.” As a successful adult “dyslexic”, with a degree in linguistics and over 20 years experience working with struggling readers, I know that to be labeled “dyslexic” does not have to lead to a future of academic failure.

But it is important that struggling readers get the right help, at the right time, so that they can become “eulexic”. I work with my clients through on-line “teletherapy” (using video conferencing software). Teletherapy is both effective and convenient. But it is extremely important that my work with clients is both engaging and playful.

That is why I have added Whizzimo to my “toolkit”. Check out how I use Whizzimo in this video.

Copying Instagram...

Over the years we’ve become big fans of how Instagram is able to quickly and simply communicate its value to its users.  So yesterday we decided to have a little fun and translate Instagram’s description of itself to Whizzimo. Here goes…

Instagram:
We love taking photos. We always assumed taking interesting photos required a big bulky camera and a couple years of art school. But as mobile phone cameras got better and better, we decided to challenge that assumption. We created Instagram to solve three simple problems:
  1. Mobile photos always come out looking mediocre. Our awesome looking filters transform your photos into professional-looking snapshots.
  2. Sharing on multiple platforms is a pain – we help you take a picture once, then share it (instantly) on multiple services.
  3. Most uploading experiences are clumsy and take forever – we’ve optimized the experience to be fast and efficient.

Whizzimo:
We love teachers. We always assumed that helping teachers create their own learning systems was unrealistic. But as technology got better and better, we decided to challenge that assumption. We created Whizzimo to solve three simple problems:
  1. Creating and modifying curricula is time consuming. Our program transforms the process of finding, formatting, and organizing useful content from hours to minutes and helps you save time before, during, and after lessons.
  2. Sharing great lessons is a pain. We help you create wordlists, then share them instantly with your students and peers in a format that is useful to them.
  3. Carrying a bunch of binders, flashcards, workbooks, and letter tiles around is tiring. But we won’t make you replace any of it – just the stuff you want to.

Hi, I’m Corey Pollard.

I’m a tutor for the Children’s Hospital of Colorado.  During the day I work with my kiddos both in person and remotely using screen shares.

I use the Wilson Reading System, and Whizzimo has been a HUGE time saver for me before, during, and after tutoring sessions.  See how I use Whizzimo with my students in the video.  Enjoy!
